Trolley Rail Replacement

Trolley Rails play a critical role in the movement of trolley along the Ship-to-Shore crane structure. They must allow for smooth travel of the trolley along the length of the boom and girder to allow for the safe handling of containers. Trolley rails are normally secured to the crane structure via specialized clips and are installed on top of a rubber pad to minimize the shocks and vibrations when the trolley wheel traverses over the trolley rails.

Trolley rails are made of high-grade steel with high carbon content which increases the hardness of the trolley rails. They are normally welded at the joints to make a continuous run and have a discontinuity at the boom hinge of the STS crane to allow for boom up and boom down operations. Specially designed rails and clamping system are installed at the boom hinge joint as this area sees a lot of shock and vibration and needs a more robust solution to mitigate the elevated forces and stresses seen at this junction. Since the Trolley traverses over the trolley rails continuously while loading and unloading containers the trolley rails tend to wear and do need replacement at least once within the life cycle of the crane. Due to the discontinuity at the boom hinge, the rail at the hinge joint, normally called the Short Rail, is normally replaced in shorter intervals than the rest of the trolley rail system.
