Sheave Replacement on STS Crane Fleet Abu Dhabi Terminals

Gantrex successfully supported Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) in a challenging boom hoist’s sheaves replacement project for their ship-to-shore (STS) crane fleet, starting with a pilot project on crane QC08.

The project highlighted Gantrex’s ability to combine engineering precision, operational flexibility, and on-site expertise to overcome technical challenges while minimizing crane downtime.

ADT had to replace worn out sheaves on several cranes. Replacing boom sheaves is a challenge compared to A-frame sheaves on STS crane. After failed attempts to replace them in a stipulated frame time, Gantrex was approached for this challenge.

ADT required:

• Strict control over crane outage duration
• A reliable and proven partner capable of managing both technical complexity and execution constraints
• A partner able to demonstrate a safe and efficient lifting methodology
• And all work to be carried out with safety being the highest priority.

Following a site visit, where Gantrex demonstrated their technical capabilities, ADT formally invited Gantrex to submit a proposal for the replacement of worn sheaves across six cranes.

Gantrex developed a tailored engineering and execution strategy based on the specific configuration of each crane:

• Conducted individualized technical calculations for each unit, adapting the solution to varying numbers and types of sheaves
• Designed an innovative lifting method allowing safe installation of sheaves directly on the crane
• Maintained close yet strategic communication with the customer to ensure alignment on pricing, scope, and execution
• As Gantrex is ISO 450001 certified, high level of safety standards were followed for work at height.

As this represented the first Crane Services collaboration between Gantrex and ADT, a pilot project for one crane was awarded to validate performance in terms of quality and execution time.

The pilot phase focused on the most critical challenge:
Replacing the boom sheaves within minimum outage window

With the team’s professionalism the replacement was completed within the agreed timeframe, without compromising quality.

The successful execution of the pilot project delivered immediate and tangible results:

• Boom sheaves successfully replaced, overcoming previous technical limitations
• No major issues during installation
• Delivery of the project within agreed schedule
• Strong technical performance, rated highly by the customer
• Best demonstration of safety culture.

Following this success, ADT demonstrated its confidence by awarding Gantrex a second contract for the remaining five STS cranes
