During a crane refurbishment assessment, OPG’s Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) revealed longitudinal cracks in the running surfaces of the crane bridge wheels. The project required the replacement of six idler wheels and two geared drive wheels, complete with shafts and bearings, on the original 1948 crane. To meet OPG’s tight timeline, Gantrex had to deliver high-quality components on an expedited schedule.

OPG selected Gantrex due to its proven expertise and ability to adapt to the challenges of refurbishing legacy equipment:

Gantrex adopted a collaborative, iterative design process:

1. Drawing Interpretation: The original designs were outdated, requiring careful updates and alignment with modern engineering standards.
2. Precision Fabrication: Laser-cut gear tooth templates were tested to match the crane’s pinion gears and ensure smooth operation.
3. Custom Design: The wheel designs were tailored to OPG’s requirements, with enhancements in material selection and performance.

Gantrex successfully delivered eight high-quality wheels (two geared and six idlers) manufactured in Spain, meeting the 10-week deadline. The wheels were installed without issue, and the gears meshed perfectly, allowing the crane to resume operations smoothly.
