Ontario Power Generation (OPG) – Crane Wheel Replacement

Overview

Client: Ontario Power Generation (OPG)
Industry: Power Generation
Completion Date: September 2024

Gantrex partnered with OPG, one of North America’s largest electricity generators, to replace the crane bridge wheels on a legacy Provincial Engineering 100/25-ton crane. OPG operates a diverse energy portfolio including nuclear, hydroelectric, natural gas, biomass, and solar, and is committed to making Ontario 100% emission-free by 2035.

Scope of Work

During a crane refurbishment assessment, OPG’s Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) revealed longitudinal cracks in the running surfaces of the crane bridge wheels. The project required the replacement of six idler wheels and two geared drive wheels, complete with shafts and bearings, on the original 1948 crane. To meet OPG’s tight timeline, Gantrex had to deliver high-quality components on an expedited schedule.

Why Gantrex?

OPG selected Gantrex due to its proven expertise and ability to adapt to the challenges of refurbishing legacy equipment:

  • Technical Expertise: Gantrex’s ability to interpret outdated and complex 1947 drawings allowed for seamless modernization of the gear and wheel designs.
  • Enhanced Design: The wheels were upgraded with improved materials, optimized hardness, and modernized tolerances to ensure longevity and reliable performance.
  • Efficient Delivery: Despite the intricacies of the design and manufacturing process, Gantrex delivered the wheels within the 10-week lead time, crucial for OPG’s site project schedule.

Innovative Solutions

Gantrex adopted a collaborative, iterative design process:

  1. Drawing Interpretation: The original designs were outdated, requiring careful updates and alignment with modern engineering standards.
  2. Precision Fabrication: Laser-cut gear tooth templates were tested to match the crane’s pinion gears and ensure smooth operation.
  3. Custom Design: The wheel designs were tailored to OPG’s requirements, with enhancements in material selection and performance.

Results

Gantrex successfully delivered eight high-quality wheels (two geared and six idlers) manufactured in Spain, meeting the 10-week deadline. The wheels were installed without issue, and the gears meshed perfectly, allowing the crane to resume operations smoothly.

Customer Feedback

“Gantrex was very quick to respond to our RFQ. They worked swiftly to design, test, and optimize the new wheels, even testing gear tooth templates to match our crane’s existing pinion gear. The wheels were delivered on time, installed with zero issues, and are now operating smoothly. It was a great collaborative experience.”
