The people who are most involved in container handling are the Maltese! Out of the list of the 100 largest container ports in 2016, we compared the total annual container throughput/country with the countries’ population to reflect the comparative importance of the container handling industry in those countries; and we came up with a figure of 7.1 TEUs/year per capita for Malta. It’s a bit as if each Maltese citizen handles 7 containers a year… amazing, isn’t? The silver medal goes to Singapore, with 5.8 TEUs/year per inhabitant. And the bronze to UAE, with 2.3 TEU/year per inhabitant. This rank is perfectly in line with Malta’s investments in infrastructure and equipment to become THE port of call for transshipments to Europe and North Africa.
